These carvings are made in Saharanpur, a city in northern of India that is a traditional center of wood carving. Made from cheetah wood, they are created by an artisan who recently began working on his own designs, thanks to fair trade sales. Before a tree in ever felled, carvers must register with a cooperative, which procures the necessary permits. The artisan is paid a fair living wage.
